The Rabbi's Study Rabbi Eugene A. Wernick |
Dear Friends, Continuing with our series on the history of the Jews in Europe we will be studying in our next Lunch & Learn the story of the Jews of Germany from the Middle Ages to the end of World War One. This is an exciting period in which the Jews rose from third class citizens to be the most productive and energized group within the German Empire. How was it possible that a small in number despised people became doctors, lawyers, judges, bankers and movers and shakers within the German Empire. Our view of Germany is colored by the Holocaust and the long dark night that brought so much suffering not only to Jews but the entire population of Europe. How can on imagine today a treatise entitled: “Deuschtum und Judentum” trying to prove that the German and Jewish spirit was essentially the same in outlook! The patriotism of German Jews so evilly brought into question by Hitler will be shown to be exemplary and on a par with the patriotism of their compatriots. How were Jews instrumental in the creation of the German Empire and the odd relationship they had with the Kaiser and Bismarck will be explored in detail. Join us Shabbat February 9th 2008 for services and our Lunch & Learn.
Affectionately, Rabbi Eugene A. Wernick
