Va-ethchanan, Sabbath Nahamu

Nahamu Nahamu Ahme yomar Ehlohahem.
Comfort ye, Comfort ye My people, Saith your G-d.

Isaiah 40:1

So begins this week's Haftorah for the first of the seven Sabbaths of
Consolation following Tisha B'Av. All seven Haftorahs are from Isaiah's
later Chapters. Historically, the timing of this Chapter's prophesy is
hard to place in contrast to the opening chapter of Isaiah. Isaiah 44:28
makes reference to Cyrus indicating that these later chapters were written
after the Temple's destruction, as opposed to the earlier chapters that
appear to have been composed more than one hundred years before then. The
essence of these chapters is to comfort Judah and provide them with hope, to
assure them of G-d's care, and that He will deliver them. This chapter
attacks the people's fears by showing that other nations idols and kings
were nothing before G-d who has limitless strength.

Deut. 3:23-7:11. Isaiah 40:1-26.
