The History Of Our Congregation Began Over Coffee

The history of Congregation Beth Ohr begins in 1956 when two women with young children were having coffee and wondering if there were other Jewish families in their community. The community was Madison Township, now known as Old Bridge. That discussion led to the formation of the Madison Township Jewish Center, later renamed Congregation Beth Ohr or ‘House of Light’. These women, along with their husbands, decided to organize a Jewish center for in their community. Together they located other Jewish families in the area who would work with them to start a Jewish center. In the early years, the Jewish center met in a variety of venues, including a bowling alley and an old firehouse.

In 1960, the synagogue purchased property on County Route 516 near Route 18 upon which the founders planned to build their own synagogue. Groundbreaking ceremonies for the synagogue were held on May 1, 1960 and the dedication of the synagogue was celebrated on March 26, 1961. At that time the synagogue consisted of classrooms for the afternoon religious school and a multi-purpose room used for all worship and assembly. In the mid 1960's, the synagogue expanded to include a second floor that was built over the existing facility. The second floor included an office, larger all-purpose room and expanded kitchen facilities. In 1989, the synagogue expanded again by building a new sanctuary seating approximately 200 people. When the sanctuary partition is removed, the sanctuary opens into the all-purpose room. The combined sanctuary/all-purpose room seats over 600 people for High Holiday services. In 2003, the synagogue completed its most recent expansion by creating the Ranit Krinsky Lubliner Memorial Children’s Library and the Rose Rosenblum Memorial Office.

Congregation Beth Ohr is very proud of the Torahs that were donated by family and friends of members, including two Torahs that were donated by the Perth Amboy Synagogue when it closed. Remembrance of the Holocaust is a tradition at the synagogue, as evidenced by our Holocaust Torah. Vera Nussenbaum arranged for its donation by the Mendlowitz family.

Our synagogue is affiliated with the United Synagogue of Conservative Judaism. We are true to the philosophy of Conservative Judaism while embracing a traditional approach to religious practices and openness to modern changes. While the synagogue strictly adheres to traditional dietary and Sabbath laws, women participate equally in our religious services.
